Personal property valuation for Form 706
IRS-Qualified Estate Tax Appraisers for Personal Property
Meet Prestige Estate Services
An introduction to Prestige Estate Services and our nationwide personal property appraisal services.
Our Appraisers. Our Standards. Our Name on Every Report.
Our in-house appraisers are W-2 employees and dedicated members of the Prestige Estate Services team. Every appraisal carries our name and our reputation.
IRS-qualified estate tax appraisers at Prestige Estate Services develop personal property valuations for executors, trustees, estate attorneys and CPAs. An estate tax appraisal documents the relevant belongings and supports a fair market value opinion for federal estate tax reporting. We confirm the required valuation date and scope with the estate’s advisors, then research and explain the conclusions in a written report.
Prestige Estate Services appraises tangible personal property. We do not provide real estate appraisals.
The people behind the appraisal
Meet Our Personal Property Appraisers
Estate reporting requires more than a total for the contents. Our appraisers connect descriptions and condition observations to market evidence so the estate’s advisors can understand the conclusions. Property competency, a defined scope and careful documentation guide the engagement.

All Prestige Estate Services appraisers are in-house W-2 employees. We do not use contract appraisers as members of our appraisal staff. Each appraiser works directly for Prestige Estate Services and is IRS-qualified and USPAP-compliant.
Start with the reporting purpose
When Is an Estate Tax Appraisal Needed?
An estate may need professional valuation of tangible belongings when its attorney or CPA is preparing federal estate tax reporting. The need depends on the assets and filing circumstances. Not every estate requires Form 706, and the same level of appraisal work is not appropriate for every item.
The estate’s advisors determine whether a return is required, whether a portability election is relevant and what supporting records are needed. An appraisal supplies valuation evidence; it does not decide tax liability or prepare the estate’s return. The IRS Form 706 resource provides the current return and related instructions.
Engage early enough to identify specialty property and recover missing records. If contents are being packed, distributed or sold, preserve photographs and item references before objects leave the estate’s control.
A date-of-death requirement alone does not necessarily mean the assignment is for federal estate tax. For a different retrospective purpose, date-of-death personal property appraisals address that broader need. Confirm the intended use so the engagement produces the right documentation.
Identify the taxable personal property
Which Belongings May Require Valuation?
The review may include household furnishings and distinctive objects within the same estate. Art, antiques, jewelry, silver and collections can require different research methods. We establish what is included and determine which items deserve individual descriptions and analysis.

Art and collections
Artist, medium, condition and documented history help guide research. A collection inventory should distinguish individual works from any groups used in the report.
Antiques and design
Maker, construction and condition help identify period furniture and decorative arts. Originality and prior restoration may also affect the value of an object.
Jewelry and silver
Marks, materials, maker and condition help define the research. Purchase records and prior specialist reports may provide useful details about the actual items.
Other belongings
Furnishings, books, equipment and vehicles can also be considered. The engagement identifies which objects are included and any need for a separate specialist.
The IRS describes a specific appraisal requirement when household and personal effects include articles of marked artistic or intrinsic value totaling more than $3,000. This is not a blanket exemption for lower-value contents. The estate-tax regulation for household and personal effects explains the requirement.
Grouping should preserve a useful record of what is being valued. A valuable painting should not disappear inside a general household total. Conversely, routine contents do not always benefit from the same level of separate research as a distinctive collection.
Connect the inventory to the return
How Does Personal Property Relate to Schedule F?
Schedule F includes property not reported on another Form 706 schedule, including household goods and personal effects. The tax preparer determines where each asset belongs. The appraisal should provide clear item references and values that can be reconciled with the estate’s reporting records.

Ownership and reporting treatment matter. Jointly held property, trust interests and other circumstances can affect how the return is completed. A residence address or storage location does not by itself establish the estate’s ownership of every object found there.
Ask the executor to identify property belonging to a surviving spouse, a trust or another person. The appraiser records the ownership information supplied and the interests being valued; counsel resolves legal ownership questions. See the IRS Instructions for Form 706 for reporting requirements.
A consistent inventory can connect room photographs, item descriptions, specialist records and report totals. Avoid changing item numbers after inspection without retaining a cross-reference. That simple control makes later questions easier to resolve.
Value at the required time
How Are Fair Market Value and the Date Established?
Fair market value reflects a hypothetical transaction between informed, willing parties without compulsion, under the applicable definition. The research must address the required date and the property’s condition at that time. An original purchase price or current insurance amount is not automatically the estate tax value.
Alternate valuation is not simply permission to choose a lower price for an individual object. The election must decrease both the gross estate’s value and the applicable estate and generation-skipping transfer taxes payable. It applies across the estate, with timing rules for property disposed of within six months. The estate’s attorney or CPA must direct this decision under the Form 706 alternate valuation instructions.
For date-of-death work performed later, older photographs, inventories, invoices and repair records help establish what existed and its condition. Later sales may provide evidence, but the appraiser must analyze their relevance instead of substituting a later transaction for the required date.
A coordinated appraisal engagement
How Does the Estate Tax Appraisal Process Work?
We begin by reviewing the estate’s reporting purpose and property overview. The scope determines inspection, research and report requirements. An on-site visit, documentation-based analysis or a combined approach is selected only when it can support the work required.

Review the estate
Provide the date of death, property locations, broad asset categories and filing needs. Identify the estate representative authorized to coordinate the work with us.
Set the engagement
We assess the work and discuss report users, scope and fees. Scheduling follows review and completion of the requirements set out in the engagement.
Inspect and research
The appraiser identifies the property and analyzes market evidence. Relevant differences between the estate’s belongings and comparable objects are considered in the value analysis.
Deliver the report
The written report explains the property, methods and conclusions. Estate advisors can use it for the agreed purpose and raise questions about the completed work.
Where access is limited, the appraiser must decide whether photographs and records are sufficient. Low-resolution images, unidentified objects or uncertain condition can prevent a supportable conclusion. Convenience alone does not establish that remote work is appropriate.
Document the reasoning
What Does an Estate Tax Appraisal Report Include?
A useful report makes the valuation understandable to people who did not attend the inspection. It identifies the property and relevant date, states the scope and value definition, and explains how the research supports the opinions. Details vary with the assets and reporting needs.

- Client, intended users and the estate tax purpose
- Property descriptions, identifying photographs and condition information
- The effective date and relevant market context
- Valuation methods and the basis for the conclusions
- Item or group values tied to an organized inventory
- Appraiser qualifications, certification and material limitations
Our work follows the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). The report should disclose assumptions and missing information rather than imply certainty that the evidence cannot support. Object competency and credible research remain essential, even when a report is formally organized.
The IRS may question a reported value. Its Art Appraisal Services guidance describes the agency’s role in reviewing art and personal property valuations. No private appraiser can promise IRS approval, acceptance or an audit result.
Make the first inquiry useful
What Should the Executor Prepare, and What Affects Fees?
Begin with the date of death, property locations, a broad contents list and the reporting deadline. Identify the executor or other authorized contact and the advisors coordinating the filing. A preliminary photo set helps us assess scope without requiring a finished inventory first.
Helpful records
Gather prior reports, purchase records, ownership details and dated photographs. Identify objects already sold or distributed, along with any items that cannot be accessed.
Scope and timing
Property type, volume, access and research needs affect the work. Multiple locations and complex collections can require more time to inspect and document.
Review our appraisal fee schedule for the general billing structure. The project estimate reflects the actual work; no estate-wide price or completion date should be assumed from a single item or photograph.
If the immediate need is an organized contents list rather than a defined estate tax valuation, estate inventory and valuation services can clarify that documentation pathway. An inventory alone should not be mistaken for a report prepared for the tax filing.
Reference materials are provided for general information. The estate’s attorney and CPA should determine filing obligations, elections, deductions and other legal or tax decisions. The appraisal engagement addresses the personal property valuation.
Practical questions
Estate Tax Appraisals for Personal Property: Additional Questions
Does the federal estate tax exemption determine whether contents have value?
No. A filing threshold concerns tax reporting rather than an object’s market value. The estate’s advisors determine filing obligations and the records needed for other responsibilities.
Can the appraisal address items already sold or distributed?
Potentially. Provide dated photographs, inventories and transfer or sale records. The appraiser must assess whether that evidence supports the required valuation date and disclose any limits.
Does being IRS-qualified mean the IRS endorses the appraiser?
No. IRS-qualified does not mean the IRS endorses the appraiser or guarantees acceptance. The appraiser’s qualifications and property knowledge must suit the work being undertaken.
Does a probate inventory replace an estate tax appraisal?
Not automatically. Court inventory and estate tax reporting may require different work. Our probate personal property appraisal service addresses valuation needs for probate and estate administration.
Can one report serve both tax and beneficiary decisions?
Possibly, if the purposes, users, dates and reporting needs are compatible. Identify both uses before engagement so the appraiser can assess whether one report is suitable.
Choosing the right appraisal service
Searching for Estate Tax Appraisers Near Me?
An estate representative searching for a nearby appraiser needs to confirm both property expertise and the purpose of the report. Estate contents may be spread across a residence, storage unit and family homes. Prestige Estate Services reviews those locations with the estate’s reporting needs when coordinating personal property appraisal work nationwide.
Personal Property Appraisers Near Me for Estate Needs
The first question is what the estate owns and what must be documented. Art, antiques, silver, furnishings and collections can require different research. Executors should compare the appraiser’s relevant property knowledge and proposed inventory method. A provider focused on buildings or land does not replace an appraiser of the tangible belongings inside them.
IRS-Qualified Estate Tax Appraisers Near Me
Qualifications should be considered together with experience in the type of property being valued and the intended tax use. Estate representatives should ask how the report will explain the objects, market evidence and value conclusions. The term IRS-qualified does not mean the IRS endorses the firm or guarantees acceptance of a report.
Form 706 and Date-of-Death Appraisers Near Me
The estate’s advisor should identify whether the engagement supports Form 706 and which effective date applies. A date-of-death value describes an earlier point in time, even if the inspection occurs later. Photographs and records from that period can therefore matter. The requested purpose and date should be settled before reports from different providers are compared.
What Executors, Attorneys, Trustees and CPAs Should Confirm
A useful proposal identifies the property covered, access needs, report users and expected deliverables. The estate representative should also confirm who can supply records and authorize access. Filing deadlines belong in the first discussion. Clear responsibilities help the appraisal fit the estate’s work plan while the tax advisor handles return preparation and tax decisions.
